Driven by global water resource pressures, energy transition, and dual carbon goals, the wastewater and sludge treatment sector is transiting from simply end-of-pipe treatment to a model focused on resource recovery, low-carbon circularity, and systematic operations. Wastewater treatment facilities are not only crucial for pollutant reduction but are also increasingly serving as a key platform to synergistically advance the energy recovery, resource reuse, and carbon reduction. Meanwhile, topics such as resource utilization of sludge, integrated treatment of organic solid waste, low-carbon processes, water recovery from black and gray wastewater, and steel and coking wastewater treatment are emerging as key focuses for technological innovation and engineering applications in this industry. The application of AI and digital management tools has further introduced novel approaches for optimizing wastewater treatment processes, asset management, and operational maintenance.

The “AI-powered Sewage and Sludge Treatment International Innovation Summit Forum”, jointly organized by Aquatech China 2026, College of Environmental Science and Engineering, Tongji University, and National Engineering Research Center for Urban Pollution Control, and other partners, will be held from 13:30p.m to 16:45p.m on October 29th. It will bring together experts from universities in China and abroad, representatives from research institutions, engineering companies, and industry practitioners to explore the cutting-edge approaches to wastewater and sludge treatment, resource recovery, and low-carbon circular development.

Bruno Lhopiteau has a 30-year track record helping public infrastructures and industrial plants in Asia to control technical risks, ensure regulatory compliance and optimize their assets. In 2004, he founded Siveco China, a leader in the Chinese environmental market in the development of Smart O&M technologies aimed at implementing best work practices from top management to technicians. Water industry clients include Suez, Veolia, Capital Eco-pro, Beijing Environment, Hong Kong EPD, Zhongshan Water, Hongcheng Water, Singapore PUB, and many more. In his spare time, Bruno lectures on Industrial Risk Management at Shanghai University, writes a regular column in Aquatech “Masters of Water” magazine and speaks at conferences on related topics.
